Inner dealings of the land are mostly done using a barter system. Outsiders, such as those whom trade with the people bring in coinages of their own and must visit the coin changer within each of the major port cities. There is however a monetary system within Floxivid. The monetary system provided herein assumes a silver-based system of coins. Most prices are given in the terms of copper and silver coins. Only very valuable things are given in terms of gold coins. Common folk mostly handle brass and copper, with only occasionally silver coins. Wealthier characters deal in silver, and some gold for the wealthiest of commoners. Platinum is extremely rare, only found with any frequency amongst the wealthiest of people. The chart below gives a simple conversion chart for the value of different coins. It is assumed that the average coin is about 3/4 of an inch in diameter and weighs around 4.5 grams (i.e., slightly smaller than a U.S. nickle), which means that 100 coins weigh one pound. 1 brass farthing (far.) = 1/5 p. = 1/50 sh. = 1 far. 1 copper penny (p.) = 1/10 sh. = 1/10 sh. = 5 far. 1 silver shilling (sh.) = 1/10 cr. = 1 sh. = 50 far. 1 gold crown (cr.) = 1/5 sov. = 10 sh. = 500 far. 1 platinum sovereign (sov.) = 1 sov. = 50 sh. = 2500 far. There is a tax paid to the Order of the Phoenix as ordered by the Prince of Candelia. The royal family also collects taxes on imports and exports. The entire land of Floxivid is under the protection of the Order of the Phoenix. The Order was set for the general welfare and protection of the inhabitants of Floxivid, but, as with any government, things could and do go wrong. There are no 'unfree' in the lands, unless one is considered a criminal. Most criminals, if their crime is not so vile as to be put to death, are put to work within the Glas Mines. The mines bring a good deal of income into Floxivid. Sapphires and Onyx are their main flow, along with a rare salt that until recently the whereabouts have only been known to the Monks of Velsignede Sted. The mines are overseen by dwarves that settled in Floxivid ages before any human stepped foot here. If one be an outlaw (considered so because they do not pledge allegiance to the family of Candelia castle), they have no rights as citizens and are looked down on by most of the industrious people of the land. Each minor city is ruled by an elected 'lord'. The word lord is used loosely. Corn, wheat and potatoes grow well in this soil. Fish and fowl are abundant here. |
