The New God: Amergen- The Just King. A relatively new god, the faith of Amergen has only been present in Anteor for about two hundred years. However, with the unification, his church quickly became the dominant religion throughout the land, eclipsing and almost entirely eliminating the worship of the old, less structured religion in most areas. His dogma is largely one of justice and strength through the unity of men. His symbol is a pair of scales, the central support of which is a downward pointing sword. The Ancient Gods:
The ancient deities of the land, dating back to times before memory. They are cold, distant entities, primal forces with few ties to mankind. More arbitrary in dogma than most gods, they have no alignments or obvious agendas. Once the only gods of the region, their worship has now faded almost entirely from human culture, though in the less civilized portions of the land, they are still paid respect. Mirin- Master of the Demon Depths. God of the seas. Kyndar- The Hunter’s Liege. God of the woods and beasts. Djen- Scion of Storms. God of the winds. Zelkast- Master of the Veil. God of the underworld. Shilmar- King of the Icy Peaks. God of the mountains. The Old Ones:
Another relic from the old days. Though not divine in their own right, these beings out of myth and regional folklore all have personal legends surrounding themselves and are often invoked or appealed to for aide. However, they are never truly worshiped, never give signs, and like the gods, will never manifest themselves. The Gray Maiden- Mother of the Lost. Represented by one of the constellations in the sky, she is said to carry the shields of dead warriors home. Because of this, acting as Shield Bearer for a fallen comrade is considered one of the most noble acts a man can undertake. Astellinus of the Black Clarions- Death’s own horseman. According to legend, Astellinus was once an ancient and powerful warlord. He rides through many of Capricorsia’s myths and tales, lopping the heads of his enemies and filling the rivers with spilled blood. Unlike the Gray Maiden, he is typically invoked with more negative connotations; a particularly brutal warrior may be called, ‘Of Astellinus’s ilk’ or of an overwhelmingly tragic battle, it may be said that, ‘The Black Clarions played.’ Old Man Worshanks- Patron of the Feast. Portrayed as a rosy cheeked fat man, typically with a mug of ale in one hand and a leg of meat in the other, he is said to have been the most generous among all hosts. In his home, it is said, the kegs were never without drink and even in the harshest winter, the meat was fresh. An excellent host is often said to, ‘Serve from Worshanks’s table.’ The Bear Mother- The embodiment of female strength. She is the fierce protector of the homestead, the one who lends women the strength to overcome the pains of childbirth and the agony of loss. It is believed that she is both human and animal in nature, possessing the guises of both beast and wise woman. While the women of Anteor are not warriors, they are still expected to be every bit as strong in spirit as the men. Should their husbands and brothers fall in battle, they are the ones expected to defend their homes and families. The Bear Mother is the one they appeal to in times of hardship and sorrow. |
