Society in Anteor is more heavily centered around ethics, discretion, and honor than law or religion. Children are brought up to respect those around them, judge only according to merit, and to know the value of a man’s good name. Women- Though a woman’s place is typically considered to be in the home, women are still respected members of society. However, the battlefield is considered a man’s domain and women are never warriors. While a female fighter would not be persecuted by the society, no one would be willing to train her, she would not be allowed on the battlefield, and she would very likely be extremely discouraged and perhaps somewhat patronized. Infidelity: When a man is married, he is bound by his own honor to respect his wife, and while the occasional wartime dalliance, far from home, is to be expected, open infidelity is considered to be an insult to a man’s wife and her family. It is not uncommon, in cases of women whose husbands have sullied their names, for the men of their families to take revenge on the cheating husband, typically in the form of a severe beating, or fight to the death, depending on the severity of the insult. Non-Marital Relationships: Pre-marital relationships are neither unheard of nor excessively frowned upon by society. However, should the union result in pregnancy, a man is expected to take the woman as his wife, legitimizing the child. Failure to do so is considered a terrible mark against his name. In certain cases, such as if the man is already married to another woman, he is still expected to support and take care of the woman and child in a manner that is discreet and will not bring shame on his wife. Children-
Due to the relatively harsh life led by the majority of the population in Anteor, the concept of childhood as many understand it is relatively unknown. Almost as soon as a child can walk, he or she is expected to begin helping around the house, and when they get a little older, they are trained to work the land or hunt. Education: For the average person in Anteor, formal education is almost non-existent. Children in noble families are taught by tutors, but there are no institutions of higher education in the land. In spite of this lack of education, however, people are far from stupid. Though they may not be literate, the oral tradition is an extremely important part of society. Histories, songs, and legends are passed down verbally from generation to generation, and almost any child can recite the exploits of the great heroes or the men of his own line back for many generations. Revenge-
A man’s right to revenge has long been an integral feature of society. If a man has been wronged in such a way that it marks his honor, name, or the honor and names of his comrades or family, he is considered bound to avenge the disgrace. Vengeance killings are not uncommon, especially in cases of rape, murder, or betrayal. However, there are limits. The punishment must suit the crime and be considered just. If a man does too much more harm than justice merits, he is considered the same as the most vile criminals: a warg. This is the lowest status a man can hold, the warg is an outcast, a soceital abomination. It is within any man’s right to kill a warg on sight. Respect for the Dead-
One of the great cornerstones of the culture is the treatment of the dead. Even an enemy, should he have been a good and noble man, is to be shown the highest respect in passing and burial. It is also believed that in order to lead a prosperous life, a man must make right by the dead he has known or those he has slain. This is often done through minor rituals, ranging from the burning of incense and offering last words at the burial site, to the ceremonial cuts made in ones own skin, that their own blood may be shed as a mark of deepest respect. Superstitions-
The Fae: Throughout most regions, especially Capricorsia and Frostcairne, along with any other area near to the forests or mountains, there is a deep seeded fear and respect for the strange, inhuman fae. This is due to the belief that the men of the land were originally given their souls by the Fae King and that should he choose, he could reclaim them. |
