![]() The city of Barra Lanke itself is located on an island in the midst of a vast, subterranean lake. It is a city of high walls and broad, dusky avenues, lined with shops and magnificent temples, all displaying the vast wealth and splendor found beneath the ground. Its architecture is an elegant blending of high columns, grand arches, and impossibly high gothic spires. Every structure displays a level of craftsmanship and skill that only those who dwell among the stones themselves could ever hope to achieve.
THE GREAT HALL OF THE BARRA SENGEREN: In the center of all the opulence stands the most exquisite building of all: the hall of the ruling council. Constructed entirely of white marble, inlayed with precious metals, forming runes and elaborate patterns upon its surface. Statues of councilors past and present line the street outside, as well as the wide, sweeping staircase leading up to the massive scarlet double doors. (Note: With the exception of the personal portals within, which are only useable by the councilor to whom they are keyed, the entire structure is under the influence of a dimensional anchor, meanin no teleporting in or out, summoning, or similar effects. Also, there is also a powerful anti-magic field present in the central chamber, as well as in the court room in which any trials worthy of the council are held.) JHINRAE OLATH PORT: The city’s port is rather large considering the boats only service the lake. Moored there are a vast array of rich, pleasure crafts, defense ships, as well as vessels designed to carry goods to territorial outposts on the edges of the lake. THE MERCHANT'S RING: A vast section of the city, selling goods and services of every conceivable variety. This is also where the majority of inns, restaurants, and taverns would be located. THE MEAT MARKET: A special part of the Merchant’s Quarter. This large area is devoted entirely to the buying and selling of slaves. Here one may find anything from the lowest goblin laborer, to the most lusty harem girl. Here one can also find The Pits, the battle arena of the city where gladiatorial fights frequently take place. THE TEMPLE DISTRICT: Temples to almost all underdark deities can be found here, along with shrines to select surface gods. Many believe that this is perhaps where the deepest corruption lies. FINANCIAL & POLITICAL DISTRICTS: Beyond the Great Hall, these are the centers of power for Barra Lanke. Business and political elites work within buildings as majestic, impressive, and as intimidating as the impenetrable security found behind each wall. HARLOR & NIAR TULLUSAS: Permanent housing in the city ranges only from the apartments of the middle and upper-middle class, to the palatial villas of the supremely wealthy. The latter more often found in Niar Tullusas. The poor within the city are mostly slaves, and therefore housed according to their master’s wishes. Because of the city’s location, there is no room for major outward expansion and high standards must be maintained. The lower classes can not afford to set up permanent residence within its secure walls. |
