The Merchant Emporium and Mercenary City

Grackazar

Name: Tyrancy of Grackazar
Leaders: Fanaxan the Slaver and Xanthalar the Cursed
Type: Militant gathering
Capital: Grackazar
Location: Beneath the surface and to the West of Ravnglade City
Monetary unit: Gems, magic and other tradable goods
Ethnicity/Race: Beholders, death tyrants(undead beholders) beholder-kin. The standard beholders number around one hundred. Their servitors and undead kin number around two thousand.
Language: Common. They have no language of their own.
Religion: They have no religion. This leads many to believe they are an Abberation species. A created species.
Climate: There are no seasons in the Underdark. The tempature remains around 60 degrees year round and is varied only by temperate drafts from volcanic activity and by underground glaciers.
Resources: The city's nominal leaders have begun to export quality slaves to the Darker cities such as Vulture's Craig and Dragon Isle.
Flora and Fauna: There is little plantlife in the Underdark. What does exist consists of fungus and lichens that grow close to volcanic vents. Animal life consists of dangerous predators and violent native life. Fanaxan and Xanthalar have encouraged the gathering of dangerous species and are in the process of arranging a Blood Arena to challenge the numerous killers on Rosha.
Known Dangers: The defenses of the city represent a great risk, but it is the natural predatory nature of life in the Underdark that remains the greatest danger. Kuo-toa and drow from the nearby cities patrol constantly, looking for food animals and slaves from the surface. The defenses of the city consist of deadblind tunnels, trapped ceilings and passages that end on a polished slope into volcanic vents. Anyone attempting to enter the city unaided is likely to die a lonely and surprised death.

Its most dangerous residents are its Beholders. Beholders are strange orb shaped creatures with many tentacles crowning their heads. These tentacles are all topped with eyes capable of emiting dangerous magical effects. However it is the singular enormous eye in the center of the beast that gives it its name. The eye emits a cone shaped field of 'anti-magic' that renders all mages and priests powerless. Combine all this with a fang filled mouth capable of biting a man in half and you have a beast to fear. They are intelligent, ambitious, capable of learning new magics and utterly ruthless. It is only their singular lack of ability to work together well that prevents them from becoming a greater danger. They only consider each other to be real threats. They are known to resurrect their slain enemies, children and allies as 'death tyrants' undead zombie beholders that obey their creator without fail. Truly, Beholders are a danger to any that would oppose them.

History: Grackazar is a recent arrival to Rosha, having only arrived in the last few months in the midst of a Supernaturally strong Thunderstorm on the surface. Grackazar is unique in that there are 'no' passages leading to the cavern city. It exists, completely isolated, in solitude. The only way in, is through the efforts of the city's mercenary mages and the Beholders' magical abilities. Since arriving on Rosha, the Beholders have sent out their mercenaries to look around and have identified most of the nations on Rosha. They are now on the verge of announcing their presense to the leadership of those nations, and pleading for neutrality in all things. They are a merchant city, they claim, and nothing more.

The beholder Xanthalar, called the Cursed, is behind the city's efforts to become known. It is called the Cursed, because it is widely believe that it is Xanthalar's fault the city is away from its own home plane. Until the city regains its former status as 'the' city to get whatever it is that everyone wants, it will remain a reviled and hated figure. This does not mean that they will not follow him, for fear, hatred and respect often go hand in hand with Beholders.
