Flora and Fauna: The Maelstom attracts all kinds of scavengers from sharks and sea serpents to aerial scavengers like gulls and harpies.
Known Dangers: Getting too close to the Maelstrom is the worst danger of all. Compared to getting pulled under, sharks and water beasts are nothing.
History: The Maelstrom is a massive whirlpool that has plagued sea travelers on Rosha for as long as ships have sailed the open waters. Only those that notice the mist cloud that shrouds the thing have a chance to save themselves. By the time the terrible roar of the swirling waters is heard, it is too late for the ship. Only those capable of flight and magical relocation have escaped. No ships have ever come that close and come away unscathed. Even the largest Whirlpools can be marked on a map and easily avoided, even by amateur sailors. In this case, however, that is not possible. The Maelstrom shifts from place to place, at random times, for no discernable reason. Many mages believe the Maelstrom is the result of a Portal gone wild and is slowly sucking the oceans dry. However, were that true, after so many years, a change in the ocean levels would be noticable, and no such change has been proven. The facts are, nonetheless, that the Maelstrom sucks down many gallons of water a day, and many ships, none of which are ever seen again. A true Mystery of the High Seas.
