The Fyres
The Fyres

The fyres are not elements like people from other planes might try to
associate them. Rather they are forces of power that drive the magical nature
of Zatrikion. They are magical, to be sure, but they are completely natural and an important
part of the plane, actively playing a role in shaping what the plane was and
what it will become. While there is no known intelligence behind these forces,
what is true is they follow streams, or laylines in a meshwork that covers and immerses
the plane. These laylines wax and wane depending on their surroundings. For
each has items that affect it, damage it, and to which it is attracted, much
like a magnet.
So, this brings one to understand why they are called Fyres. Like the name
suggests, no matter what other properties each fyre possesses, they are fueled
by something. Each, when left alone, burns readily and strongly for a time, but
without fuel, will naturally extinguish. Consequently, when an excess of fuel
is added to the fyre, it can quickly run out of control, and perhaps even
explode with catastrophic results.
There six types of fyres as they have been called. And each has unique
qualities that define them.

Decay

Often referred to as Rotfyre, Coldfyre, or Fyre of Plagues. People
put up wards against it, for it is the most dangerous fyre to living
beings. The touch of this raw energy can freeze or eat away flesh.
|
Gathers up on the poles and in areas of death like graveyards. Attracted
to areas of filth or where old food is left to rot.

Hates clean houses and happy emotions.

Fyre of the planet. Strong and dependable, the laylines of this fyre
seldom move. Can be explosive if left to build up. Very dangerous to
use, powerful when mastered.

Earth, stone, heat and magma. Pools up on islands. Rich deep in the

Never reachable in the oceans and lakes, nor in the air.

The most mobile of the fyres, these laylines shift with the currents
of air and sea. Commonplace mages can use them, for they are easy to
touch but because of their fluid nature, Tidalfyre also difficult to
master.
|
Responds to the moons and currents of the other fyres. Drifts about
high in the atmosphere, and through the oceans and lakes.
|
Very weak on nights without a moon. Thunderstorms can disrupt it.
Never found below the earth or in underdark.

Bursts to life and then dies out quickly. Like a mirage, no real staying
power that people can tap into. The laylines of Soundfyre, though, can
be shaped and guided by bards or faeries. Because of its connection
with mirages and illusions, sometimes it is called Lightfyre.
|
Enjoys children and bards and people that with a sense of humor. Likes
faekin, and kinder. Music calls to it.

Chaos
|
And finally, the last fyre, Chaos, was not readily identified by The
First. Initially, it was thought to be some form of Soundfyre. It was not discovered because Chaos is
not normally thought of something that would prevent change. But on
Zatrikion, it does. Chaosfyre keeps the plane from evolving, for the way
it constantly battles with technology.
|
Laylines of Chaosfyre can be found anywhere and everywhere, at any
given time, especially when least expected. Very powerful, raw energy
that is nearly impossible to control.

It is important to note that the laylines do not form a perfect mesh along
the plane. There are holes, even in places the fyres would normally be
attracted. This is just because of the inherent chaotic nature of these
laylines, and because of the Mystical Storm that has disrupted them. Consequently,
some areas of Zatrikion might be rich in magic while others have no magic at
all. And while any given person might not realize that the fyres are what drive
their magic, all magic on the plane gets its source from this power. So, in
areas of Zatrikion without laylines, magic cannot be cast.
