Lore of the Moons
Runic, Father of Dreams, and Amael, Mother of Chaos, had two children that
were sent about the universe to extend their creative abilities over the
cosmos. Korai, the swiftest, had the power to gather the cosmos to create
worlds and to blow life into them. While his sister, Jeksei fashioned the matter into land, her skills beautified the worlds of her family.
Now it is said that Korai traveled to the distant corner of the universe to create a world in the name of his father, and Jeksei was to follow soon after. As always, Jeksei traveled forth at the side of her father, Runic. Unknown to the family, Malkahi, sworn enemy of Runic, devised to beguile his enemy's child. When Jeksei strayed from her father's side, she came upon the new world of Auvrynon. Thinking it was created by Korai, she sought to smile splendor upon this world. Malkahi manifested himself unto her and took the daughter of Amael into his embrace. Their love made the land's history and hills, half joy and half sorrow, strikingly beautiful yet darkly twisted.
It was Korai that first discovered the union of his sister and his father's
hated rival and they fought. Korai suffered a devastating wound from Malkahi,
and between the pain of the son and the tears of the daughter, Runic and Amael
learned of Malkahi's treachery. The tears and blood spilled formed the seas and the storm, forever angry, forever chaotic.
The tale ends there...with the same tale being played out in the night skies
of Auvrynon.
Moon 1 – Jeksei
Closest Moon to Auvrynon.
Also called the Shining Lady, Consort of Malkahi, the primary moon of Auvrynon, often equated with the Queen of Auvrynon.
A grayish-lavender color, she is the largest moon visible with a 44 day cycle.
Has the same diameter as Korai, but she appears over twice as large.
Moon 2 - Malkahi
Second closest moon, forever separating Jeksei from the other moons.
Also known as the Watcher and Moon of Thieves.
Visibly, he appears as the second largest moon.
His dusky-red color is like a baleful eye that misses nothing.
Malkahi’s orbit is unique, seemingly impossible. He forever shuns the sun by staying on the dark side of Auvrynon, keeping him visible only at night and always full.
Due to his strange orbit, Malkahi has no cycle.
Moon 3 - Korai
The third closest moon from Auvrynon.
Visibly, the second smallest moon in the Auvrynon sky, he is, by far, the brightest of the moons, bathing the lands in a silvery-white color.
Because of the high visibility of Korai, the series of craters on the right side of the moon are easily visible as a deep, permanent shadow.
He is also the shortest and fastest orbit, with a 28 day cycle.
Moon 4 – Amael
The fourth moon out from Auvrynon
It is whispered that Amael and Runic once roamed the velvety skies together, never parted, with her bright, yellow light warming his heart until Malkahi's treachery forever tainted her mellow color. In her despair and shame, she withdrew from her lover's side. Her orbit is much further south than the path of the other moons, appearing in a low arch over the horizon.
The smallest moon in both size and appearance, her hue is a bittersweet orange color.
She is encircled with a series of rings that run diagonally across her equator, these change color chaotically, dependant on atmospheric conditions, the location of the other moons and solar flares. Within Auvrynon, some astrologists foretell omens, good or ill, based on the unpredictable nature of the color of her rings.
She has an 84 day cycle.
Moon 5 – Runic
The furthest moon from Auvrynon.
Also known as the Moon of Mystery and Dreams.
Visibly from Auvrynon, Runic appears to be the 3rd largest moon.
He is the darkest moon, almost as dark as lampblack with a deep bluish-black color; he appears like a shadow in the sky.
Because of his distance, there is no doubt that Runic has the widest diameter.
Runic has a 62 day cycle.
Occurances & Conjunctions
When Malkahi and Korai are the only two full moons, Korai is bathed in a reddish glow. The combination is both beneficial and baneful. Traveling is dangerous, and the wise finish their travels by dusk on those long days. However, to those seeking money, business agreements are settled favorably on those eves.
If Malkahi is ever the only moon in the night sky, it is prophesied that the dead will return to the world on that night. Red ethereal mist will rise from the graves to terrorize those that they knew in life. These nights are named the Nights of Blood.
A Rare occurance: Spring mornings, when Malkahi has drifted low to set before sunrise, and Jeksei and Korai are unseen. Runic would be in the sky. As Amael is waxing, the new day sun creates a halo off her thin atmosphere creating dual concentric rings low in the sky. Named ‘The Rings of Eternity’, couples try to coincide weddings on these blessed mornings. While Amael’s blessing does not guarantee a wedding free of strife, it does bless the couple with fertility and happiness.
